The meaning of layers, the layers of meaning...
When people look at artwork what do they see? Often the first impression is just that top layer of visual act, what our eyes perceive and record in first seconds. We see a portrait, landscape, colours, figures, shapes, abstract lines...However what is the real and full picture? In mixed media art the concept of working through layers make the art being more about the process and artist experience than the final visual aspect. It's the journey through layers of meaning and some of them will eventually almost disappear in the final work and some emerge on the very last minute. It's the concept so much different from a traditional concept of making a piece of "art" that it crosses the borders of creativity, self-development and psychological boundaries. It is something simply impossible to answer when you get the question "what type of art you do?". What type? hm...My inner self-discovery I suppose...
So art journaling, mixed media, mixed media expressive painting, intuitive painting, layered abstract, re-working old artwork, re-using art journal pages...What all that have in common? It is the search, looking for, seeking the meaning. Seeing if art can communicate with us beyond what we belive we rationally know. It is all about layers and more layers- but not just building them up. There are layers that will eventually get covered fully, areas of work that reveal just a small piece in a final stage or parts that got ripped off and removed. Somebody may ask- why? Why do you make something and then later cover it up, destroy or just use a small part? Would it not be easier to create the final piece from the beginning? Maybe for some yes, but for me and other creatives who have fallen in love with the process more than with the end result, there is no other option. The process is all about the learning, it is the self-discovery, looking at questions and why do they emerge. Dealing with artwork in that way is the art dialogue between the creator and the soul. Something personal and unique...I could go and create in a different way and sometimes I do- sketch, paint a portrait or challenge myself with something new in terms of a technique or material. That happens when I want to brush up my skills, try a new medium, but has little to do with he BIG magic- that magic that happens when it is not me talking but the art that I connect with during the creative process. That is the real thing...
There are moments in my creative life wen I have to let the artwork wait, let it go because I feel stuck for some reason. Later I would come back to it and it has a new meaning. Some layers must wait for me and some at that point are not needed anymore but had to be created previously to make it possible for me to move on to the next stage. The physical process of making art becomes a mental process of inner journey. There are layers of meaning and meaning of layers that is constantly happening during the process. And that experience can only happen if we let the expectations of creating the "thing" let go, forget about potencial judgment and stop comparing. All extremely difficult but worth every second of the discovery the voice of your own story, layers and meaning...
Where is your big magic?
