People often ask creatives where and how do they find an inspiration or how to stay inspired. Well let me tell you that in my case there is no hypnotising staring for hours in art galleries (I woul be nice to have that time by the way!) or sitting and waiting for the muse to appear. Life itself (yes that sometimes rubbish, problematic, depressive but also joyful life) becomes pure and full inspiration! Daily struggle, people we know, people we watch, enemies and friends, our own struggles, nature, journeys- it all is a part of massive impulse to create. Yes there are tons of artwork as well so generously shared on social media that feed creativity - but that is not the only source.
I struggle with seriousness on all levels. Life seems so much easier to bear when there is some type of distance to yourself, play, fun and simple playfulness...In days filled with constant demands to behave like that and that, meet certain expectations and all that...where is the play? We lost the ability we possessed as kids where the joy of simple play and laughter accompanied the daily life. Creativity and playfulness are close sisters. Through playfulness we can let creativity fly in unlimited directions and thanks to creativity playfulness becomes meaningful.
Do you believe in collage? I mean do you dare to see if creative process can answer your questions that you even didn’t dare to ask yourself? There is a magic that happens during creative state of mind and keeps me coming back and back… That magic when art starts expressing our deep thoughts, mind, something we are not aware…I started feeling that magic when first time let art journaling to take over the controlling mind and learnt to listen more to what is not said aloud. That is why I decided now, after few years, to share the secret of that process and show you (or rather try -as it is going be quite difficult) how collaging for art journaling can become subconscious practice.
2 years ago I never painted anything in my life (ok painted bedroom wall and my nails maybe few times). A paintbrush was an enigmatic tool reserved for those special people who were born gifted to be able to produce images with that magic wand…
If you are one of those creative people blessed with madness of constant visualisation you know what I mean saying that every day can bring an inspiration. I find seasons and natural changes in each month somehow worth remembering. Images that can hit your mind can be found everywhere from the park to bus station. It can be a found, random object (often called “rubbish or litter by some people;) but to you it has that colour, pattern, structure, reminds you of something…you name it. I decided to do this monthly, simple collection of my images and words that I find inspiring each month. Feel free to share or pin it. And with a hint of some humour I hope it will shake up your creativity a little bit. Happy creativity in November!
Have you ever created something so unfamiliar to you that wondered why did you do it? It has been happening to me for 6 moths during my art journaling in the biggest art journal format I had. I could not understand why constantly the kind of urban grunge theme was emerging. I don't like cities, its noisy environment and myself choose to live in a small town where its easy to have contact with nature. And here we go - urban style journal pages, like city buildings walls shouting with graffiti...why, why, why?
Art journaling started and put on fire my journey into mixed media world and still is a part of my very regular creative practice. Art journals are secrets keepers, they go beyond words and meaning...
I believe when we start trusting out intuition through creative process and let art talks to us instead dictating pre-planned outcome we somehow reclaim ourselves, our soul and true self. Convention acquired through years and socialization and external expectations may be blocking that unique connection with true self.Shaking and twisting the conventional approach is like some form of release helping to see beyond the blocks.
